Building Performance

  • air flow within a building

Air flow within the typical building. Cold air leaks into the basement, while warm air rises and escapes through the attic.

A building is a collection of systems, almost like a human body. The shell, or the building envelope, is like the building's skin. Hot and cold temperatures, moisture—all of these affect the building envelope as air and moisture move through the air pathways in the building. The location of these pathways will dictate how comfortable the interior spaces in the building feel. Sometimes the location of the air pathways can even damage your building. This damage could include mildew and mold growth or even structural problems.

Building performance is a set of measurable building characteristics including:

  • Durability
  • Moisture Management
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Indoor Air Quality
  • Structural Performance
  • Thermal Comfort
